We are continually updating our listings and the information on our site to help you choose an international school, regardless of your child’s age. We have included everything from pre-nursery to sixth form, from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

Phuket is in southern Thailand and is the largest island in the Kingdom, located in the Andaman Sea. It is a popular home for expats with its stunning beaches, and it has a more relaxed atmosphere than some cities on the mainland.

At present, there are 13 established international schools in Phuket, and the number is slowly rising. Most expats and many Thais in Phuket are relatively affluent, so the demand for high-quality international schools is high. Parents naturally want their children to receive the best possible education, so international schools are the obvious choice. Generally, the schools have a reputation for academic excellence, which is matched by superb facilities.

A range of curricula are available, including Bi-lingual, British, American, Montessori and the complete International Baccalaureate programme (IB), giving parents an excellent choice and helping to plan for their child’s further education.

Why choose an international school?

Demand for high-quality education is increasing throughout Thailand, and indeed, that is no different in Phuket. Sadly, most government-run schools in Phuket lack the resources, so students’ level of education is regarded as being poor. The teachers in the private international schools in Phuket are usually internationally qualified, such as holding a PGCE from the UK. Lessons are taught predominantly in English, and the curricula are recognised globally, creating more opportunities to study overseas or at the top universities in Thailand.

Although the cost of international schools in Phuket is relatively high, the island is renowned for residents having high disposable incomes. However, there are other options such as bi-lingual schools, which are considerably cheaper for those who find private international schools beyond their means. Lessons are usually taught in Thai and an international language, typically English, with most international teachers holding the TEFL qualification.

Why choose a bi-lingual school?

There are several reasons why parents may choose to send their children to a bi-lingual school in Phuket, but the primary reason is usually financial. The tuition fees are often between 10% and 20% of those charged at international schools, so they frequently become the preferred option until students reach secondary or High School age. Bi-lingual schools will ensure that students are proficient in English, or another international language, which will help ease the transition to an international school.

What to consider when selecting an international school in Phuket

Selecting a school for your child is challenging whatever country you may be in, but if you are choosing an international or bilingual school, it can be more complex as there are more variables to consider. Often the cost and the location are the primary considerations for younger pupils, but as they get older, curricula, facilities, class sizes, and the nationality of the teachers will all influence your decision. We have tried to categorise the different types of schools on our website to hopefully simplify the task of creating a shortlist.
